Hospitals Do Poorly on Breastfeeding Support

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25124745/

Its true. Every once in awhile there will be great nurses and great LC's, but if you're not very knowledgeable about nursing already, it will be a battle at some point in the hospital. The next battle is with pediatricians. So many OB's and Ped's say they support breastfeeding but then give old (and wrong) information or make it seem harder than it has to be (huge lists of food and drinks to avoid). I see the damage done to breastfeeding relationships by hospitals all the time. The good news is that almost all of the issues can be fixed with the help of a good LC, a good book like "The WOmanly Art" and just taking the time.

I remember being told that the nutritional value is nil after one year of age, to continue breastfeeding - this was from a family doctor (one I normally don't see, but needed a sick visit for me). The topic only came up because he was prescribing me a medication, and I asked if it was safe with breastfeeding my (then) 1 year old child. He then put in his own comment, when I told him I was planning to continue to nurse until she weaned - even if she went to 2+ years of nursing.

Yeah, like the nutritional value of breastmilk just disappears at one year of age. Suuuuuuuuuuuure! Freaking idiot!

I totally agree with you, they keep recommending formula to help baby sleep longer, or to give mom a peace of mind. peace of mind?!?! I don't get it. I'll have peace of mind knowing that my baby is well fed with milk specially made for babies!

This is so true! I find it depressing...
